Lilly Pinks

Kaixo everyone,

Summer is upon us, and while I love the nice weather and the relaxation, I find summer the most difficult season to dress up and look elegant! A nice scarf or a structured blazer in any other season can up any outfit, but what can you do when you wanna look bad and boujee and it's a million degrees out? LILLY!

While I have shared my concerns over the brand's direction before, it still remains true that Lilly Pulitzer is a fantastic brand to look pretty and whimsical in the summer months. Recently, Lilly has been rocking it with their pink prints! I could see myself wearing any of these:

Clockwise from top left:
Amelia Island Tunic: Tunics such as this one are the perfect summer alternative for structured clothes that we usually only resort to in other seasons. Linen is light and breezy, so it's a great summer fabric! However, be wary, it wrinkles easily!
Mila Stretch Shift Dress: Mila dresses are usually very short, but since Lilly now offers different lengths in some of the prints, prospects are looking up! Ayeeee
Faye Skort: Seersucker is the perfect summer print, and skorts are great to tan your legs without accidentally mooning anyone. Win-win.
Elsa Silk Top: I own two Elsa tops, and it's been a hit and miss. The first is still going strong and the colors are still vibrant. The second, however, suffered major color bleeding when I hand washed it. I'm really conflicted because I absolutely ADORE this print. It is one of my favorites in years, and should it be available in the next APS, I would pull the trigger.
Amber Lynn Sandal: I'm sure that these are not the most comfortable with the lack of platform and the high heel, but PINK GINGHAM SANDALS. Praying they are available during the APS.
Dusk Strappy Silk Dress: Toile prints are some of my favorite, and I would get this dress hadn't I just gotten another pink shift with a toile print.
La Fortuna Off-The-Shoulder Top: I just ordered this and it's coming my way! Can't wait to wear it!

All in all, I would definitely consider getting the La Fortuna top (already did!), the Elsa top and the sandals.

Which are your Lilly summer picks? What styles do you tend to gravitate towards? Let me know!

My Favorite Coffee Table Books

Kaixo everyone,

Once again, my 5-minute determination to blog consistently faded into oblivion. Life got in the middle for the umpteenth time. As a 27-year-old grad student, it is nothing new. However, as I get closer to the end of my PhD program (say what??), I start thinking about my future more and more (and more and oh my goodness Jesus take the wheel I'm hyperventilating). As much as I wanted to when I got to the US for the first time, I have come to terms with the fact that there is no place like home, and I want to move back to the Basque Country as soon as possible.

One of my future projects is to buy an apartment in my hometown, and start a life. It has been low-key terrifying to see how I have gone from exclusively browsing fashion stores to *gasp* decor shops...!? Exactly. Now, I know that there are more important things to an apartment than decor (like, erm, a bed? A toilet?), but right now, in a moment of my life where I have 0 capital to buy an apartment and I'm still paying rent in the US, all I can think of is how to spruce up my temporary home.

One of my favorite things to make myself at home is books. Lots of them. Most books serve the purpose of well, entertaining me to no end, but are not considered "decor" per se. Enter coffee table books. I had never paid attention to these books until my mom got me a coffee table book about Barbie's history (if I ever post consistently, I will talk about my love of Barbie), and I got hooked. Ever since, I have slowly started collecting coffee table books that I hope to take to the apartment of my dreams. Here are my favorites:

- All in Good Taste: Kate Spade's darling coffee table book was an impulse buy because a) it was pink and b) it was the least expensive thing in store. It is the perfect book to be the hostess with the mostest, and while I kind of forgot about it (I bought it in the US, brought it to Spain and left it there), now that I live alone and have entertained guests I would say, successfully, this book is a great reference. Bonus: It has recipes and literary references. This former English literature major approves.
All in Good Taste by kate spade new york (25-30$)

- Style: Raise your hand if Lauren Conrad was (or still is) your first fashion crush. I read all her L.A. Candy books (I still have them!), loved how she was the normal one in Laguna Beach, the fact that she interned at Teen Vogue, and of course, all her cute outfits! I gotta admit that when I got this book I was a little disappointed. What was with all the text and few images? Why is she talking about make-up? Mind you, I was 18 and had virtually 0.5% of the idea about make-up that I have now, and it's not a lot, believe me. However, revisiting it throughout the years has proved me wrong. It is honestly one of the most useful books when I'm thinking of my own style and what fits and suits me.
Style by Lauren Conrad (4-15$)
- Tory Burch In Color: It is no secret that Tory Burch is one of my favorite brands. I love my Millers, I have a beautiful bright orange camera bag that I couldn't live without, and I swear by their fragrances. Apart from that, the decoration in their stores is probably my favorite. Touches of orange, dark green, gold... It evokes LUXE. I like to go to the store by the Magnificent Mile in Chicago and have an explosion of style and decoration ideas in my mind. However, when I leave, I always forget, and I go back to Pinterest like everyone else. Well, this book is the fixed continuation of that explosion that never goes away. The pictures that inspire her, the brand's history, and how each chapter is organized by color is A+ worthy.
Tory Burch In Color by Tory Burch (50$, 100$ for the special edition)
- Whiskey in a Teacup: Boy, did this book deliver. Elle Woods, Melanie Smoother, Madeline Martha Mackenzie are some names that she has taken as an actress, but let's not forget fashion designer, and my favorite, executive producer of movies for women with women and about women. Reese Witherspoon is the GOAT. So when she published this book, I ordered without blinking. As an avid reader, I loved the stories about her family. As a hungry person, I loved her recipes. As a LINGUIST, I loooooved the chapter on Southern pronunciation. I don't have much time for recipes, but I definitely wanna try making biscuits with her recipe!
Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon (20-30$)
- Lilly Pulitzer x ASSOULINE: When Lilly announced they were releasing a 60th anniversary coffee table book, I gasped. Some fans in Lilly Facebook groups were like "not worth it", and I was like "wha...?". Considering they shill thousands on clothes with super similar prints with decreasing quality, they would not get it? Their loss. Assouline is a fantastic brand for art and design books amongst others, and when I got my Lilly book, I stopped everything and went through all the pages. While this book is more picture-heavy, I loved seeing pics throughout the years of the brand! While I go through times when I love Lilly and times when I hate it, this book is fabulous.
Lilly Pulitzer x ASSOULINE by Lilly Pulitzer (85$,  195$ for the special edition)
- Louis Vuitton City Guides: Last but not least, I have been loving Louis Vuitton City Guides! When I travel, I usually go low-key and budget-friendly, but whenever I feel boujee, I wanna know where to head to! This is where these books come into play. There are tons of city guides in English, French and Chinese of different cities around the world, and each of them is written or edited by a local figure/celebrity/it girl. So far, I've got the Chicago, London, Madrid and Sydney ones. I'm going to Australia in August, so I can't wait to get there and go to all the cool spots! :)
Louis Vuitton City Guide by Louis Vuitton (37$)
So there you have it! I'm a coffee table book hoarder and I need help and I'm proud of it! In fact, I've also recently gotten Classic Style by Kate Schelter, so I will give it a read and let you all know. Which are your favorite coffee table books? Sound off in the barren land known as the comments section!
Love,

- Ane

Feel-good pinks

Kaixo everyone,

Long time no see! I have obviously been MIA. I am currently in my 4th year of the PhD program, and last semester I passed my dissertation proposal defense, making me ABD (All But Dissertation). While I would love to be wearing my pretty pink outfits out, it's mostly been a black sea in the midst of snow and ice, which is, truth to be told, hella depressing. I have been in a funk recently, and today, when I got home, I started to think about the things that would make me feel better by wearing them. Pink, preppy and pretty are my three feel-good Ps. Here are my picks:

Clockwise from left to right:
J. Crew Long Sleeve Dress in Peony: I am not one to be a big fan of J. Crew dresses, because for some reason they are all so... shapeless. This one however, caught my eye in a way that I would love to have it and be a functioning adult with it.
BaubleBar Bow Drop Earrings: Let me preface this for these earrings (and for the rest of the post) that I am not the biggest fan of gold. I love gold accents in my home, but not on my skin. However, could these be the long-awaited exception to the norm? Bows give a delicate and feminine touch to any outfit, and right now, that touch makes me happy.
Lilly Pulitzer Elanie Dress: I am happy to report that after a while not feeling Lilly Pulitzer, it seems to have come back. Not for prints, but their solid dresses are well, damn solid. This dress would be incredible for a wedding.
Gucci Mini GG Marmont Shoulder Bag: LMAO for affordability, but damn I would rock this baby if I could.
Lilly Pulitzer Allyson Dress: This is my favorite item on this list hands down. No need to be partial, it is. Reasons why: a) It's fit and flare (like 4/5 dresses on the list), the dress type that fits me best, b) it is not too short for my 5'8ft body, which is something Lilly should work on pronto, c) THE COLOR. The Elanie dress is stunning, but the color on the Allyson is out of this world. I seriously considered buying it, but at the price point, I decided not to. Like my friend Anna said, Alexa, play Pretty Hurts by Beyoncé.
Yves Saint Laurent Heart and Arrow Rouge Volupte Shine Collector Lipstick: Well damn that's a mouthful. I have a never-ending collection of lipstick, but this would be perfect for a gift or to reverse-Marie Kondo my bathroom.
Gal Meets Glam Collection Edith Dress: I think a lot of Julia Engel's dresses are too old-time for me, but this dress could be lightened up with some fun accessories, my white Converse, a denim jacket and a smile. I dig it.
Lilly Pulitzer Cascading Petals Earrings: When I saw this on the web, I fell in love. When I saw them on a model though, they were bigger than I thought. I will probably have to see them in person, but the idea is very cute and they would complement my extra persona really well.
Gal Meets Glam Collection Zelda Dress: Another Julia Engel piece that puts me in a romantic mood and makes me wonder about Jane Austen's novels. Although Jane Austen did not write about love, she wrote about finding a husband. One of my favorite literature professors from my undergrad who sadly passed away on Christmas Eve said it, and I will never forget that.
Kate Spade New York Glitter Heart Phone Case for iPhone X, XS and XR: I recently got an iPhone XR, so this cute case would be a nice addition. Kinda cheesy, but it goes well with all the other options on this list.

There is no particular reason that I compiled these things other than the fact that it made me feel good to look at this aesthetically pleasing image. I probably will not buy any of these things (the Allyson dress though... ugh so hard), but I just sat down to write this, did it in one sitting, and I feel good and less funky after it. That should be the point of blogging, after all.
Love,

Another Year, Another Lilly Agenda

Kaixo everyone,

Y'all, it's that time of the year again. It's time to choose my agenda for next year, and lo and behold, I cannot choose which to buy. No news. I have had a Lilly Pulitzer agenda since 2014. My first Lilly agenda was probably my favorite grad school purchase. Grad school can be gloomy with all the challenges, work and long hours, and having a splash of color in your backpack is definitely a little lifeline. In fact, whenever I was bored in class (oops!), I used to organize my planner (guilty as charged). I crowded it with stickers mainly, lol.

My agenda is definitely an important part of grad school, and choosing which one to use for the entire school year is essential. While I think Kate Spade agendas are really professional and have beautiful covers, they are a little gloomy for me. Maybe it's a sign I'm not ready to grow up yet? Possibly.

In spite of my current relationship with Lilly Pulitzer, I still consider myself loyal to Lilly planners. I've had the Peelin' Out for 2014-2015, Wild Confetti for 2015-2016 and Southern Charm for 2016-2017, and I've loved these planners with all my heart.

As you can see, they are all quite different, but they have some things in common: All three have busy prints, flowers (and they are not Tusk in the Sun because for heaven's sake Lilly, not everyone likes that print!). They are all large agendas, and I feel this size is the most practical for me. It fits my backpack nicely and gives me enough space for everything I write in it, which is quite a handful.

For this year's prints, I loved the Beach and Bae print. It has sailboats and it reminds me of my Ali dress in Out to Sea. Unfortunately, this print is only found in the Jumbo version, and it's too much for me, considering that aside from French and Catalan, I'm not taking classes this year. Thus, my favorite options are the following:

Gypsea, 30$
Sparkling Sands, 30$
They are both busy prints, no elephants, but only Gypsea has flowers. However, Sparkling Sands has more colors. I am SO TORN. I found Kate's review of the large agendas at Lonestar Southern really funny and helpful, but I felt I could relate to almost all the aspects she outlined for each agenda! I am definitely going to need to see some IRL pictures of these two to make my final decision. Your help is also appreciated! Which one do you like best? If you have chosen one, which did you choose?

On Basque Prep's Mind: Is Lilly Pulitzer even Lilly Pulitzer anymore?

Kaixo everyone,

Disclaimer: I am no journalist. I mean, many act like it, but like any other job, it is hard (sorry peeps, The Odyssey only does not count. But it is a great start!). Whenever my best friend (who actually is a journalist) talks about the ups and downs and details and formatting and word choice and all the shebang, I start to hyperventilate and go back to my safe haven of sounds, languages and L2 acquisition. However, I have always had a knack for writing. Before this blog, I had two, and one of them was pretty successful (my mom was NOT the only reader). Even some actual journalist friends said I had a good style of writing (YAY!). So please, I would like to introduce a new series called On Basque Prep's Mind. This could be a bust, but I also feel like it could be fun to share my thoughts here, no matter how silly the topic may be. After all, it's my little corner of the internet.

So with that being said, let's talk business. Let's talk about the pink and green elephant in the room. Lilly Pulitzer. The epitome of Southern belles, sorority girls, Northeastern preps, some West Coast outliers and yours truly. Bright colors, fun styles, and cheeky print names. For me, it means TONS of saving up and eagerly waiting for those cherished store visits that usually happen once or twice a year.

I started to fall in love with the brand right before moving to the USA. My senior year of college, I had just moved back from my study abroad year in Colorado, and I was having major star and stripes FOMO. I missed my friends, the whole American college experience, real deal BBQ sauce and even my language skills (gentle reminder that I'm a linguist. I panic at losing my English the minute I set foot in Spain). So I started reading blogs. Tons and tons and tons of blogs. I literally looked up "fashion blogs" on Google (#amateurhour, I know). And that's when I started seeing Lilly. At first, they looked like a unicorn had puked on someone's shorts. But then, they started to evoke dreamy East Coast beaches, poplars and summer nights. It represented a dream life (or at least a two-week vacation) and I was sold.

However, what once made me feel happy and excited, is now a series of sad disappointments. At first, I thought my style was evolving back into simpler, cleaner cuts and less busy colors, but there are definitely more reasons involved. Without going into more details concerning the decline in quality, these are the main changes I have noticed:

PRINTS:
Let's take a trip back to memory lane, and see some prints of 2012-2013, back when I was finishing college:

I could see myself wearing any of these prints. Look at them. They are varied in colors, patterns, and themes. You have animals, sea life, plants, artsy forms and real-life products, but they all evoke a different setting, feeling and response to them. They are visually pleasing, not busy, and in my opinion, artistically well-crafted. I particularly like that they stick to a limited number of colors for each, and each part of the print is well-defined and differentiated from the others. Look at the print on the lower right corner: You have stripes and superposed flowers with the same color scheme. These were original prints, the objects represented are easy to discern and they are definitely different from each other.

However, look at the prints now:

These are some of the current prints you can purchase from Lilly. If we compare them to the previous prints, we see the following: The colors are very, very similar to each other. Apparently, originality is no longer part of the dictionary at Lilly. Apart from Ceviche, the rightmost print in the second row, the rest of the prints are barely lined, the limit between the objects can be barely traced. The prints are also overwhelmingly busy. Like, beware for color-induced epileptic episodes, y'all. There are also no contrasts between lighter and darker colors. As a paler person, darker colors usually look better on me, and pastels and light colors make my nuclear-white skin tone even whiter and/or pastier. There really is no need.

In general, although somewhat aesthetically pleasing, the newer prints are not inspiring, and it does not make me want to wear any of them. The only one I could consider would be the Ceviche print. How could the prints of my beloved brand go from everything I wanted to a hard pass? *Cries*

STYLES:
When she started the brand, Lilly Pulitzer used colorful fabrics to hide juice stains and chose the fabrics that could hide the wearers' gin bellies. My kind of gal! (although I'm more of a vodka person myself). So back when I discovered the brand, Lilly still offered beautiful shifts true to the brand's roots, season-appropriate garments and sturdy, good-quality materials.

Now, it's all about #Resort365, itty-bitty lengths and styles, Forever21 trends at triple the price and silk that breaks just by looking at it. #Resort365 refers to the idea that Southern Florida weather is a year-long affair. Thus, pineapple prints, monkeys and the 25 millionth rendition of seaweed and algae are the prints to be worn in let's say, November. It is definitely acceptable to wear that in November. If you feel like it, you absolutely should. No one should tell you what or how to dress like. However, I do miss darker colors and more season appropriate prints. If you want to keep selling pineapple prints, by all means do it, but please do not forget that most of us do not live in Florida. I am the kind of person who does not care about what others think about my outfit, but it is impossible not to feel self-conscious wearing seaweed in the cold Midwestern winter.

TRENDS:
Other aspects of Lilly Pulitzer that make me want to buy the brand less and less are the new, more trendier styles like crop-sets, super-short dresses, off the shoulder styles and tassels. They are darling, but they really do not go well with my body. I am a size 8 and I range from size S to M in Lilly, which is not bad at all, but whenever I try any of the new styles, I feel it's too revealing, too short and too flimsy. Anytime I read the reviews of new dresses, everyone says "too short." At 5'8, I do not want to risk it. Moreover, all stores from AEO, to Loft, to ASOS sell off the shoulder styles and tassels. Unlike previous timeless Lilly styles, these seem to be trends that come and go. At the Lilly price-point, I would much rather buy them at any of these way cheaper stores. Basically, Lilly, You! Are! Not! Forever! 21!

CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Anyone remember that time when during Cyber Monday, Lilly offered the Palm Beach Tote in Gimme Some Leg? I was supposed to get that according to my receipt (read more about it here), but I got some earrings (EL-OH-EL!). It was definitely a free gift, and it is better than nothing, but my receipt showed an image of the bag. I called Customer Service a couple of times, and the first representative was, pardon my French, a Class A B*tch. She sounded exasperated from the very beginning. I do understand that it can happen after a long day of work, but I called at 10 a.m., and as someone who has worked in retail, I know that you will encounter unhappy customers, and you should learn to deal with it without treating them as if they were dumb. The second representative was way nicer, and should probably teach lessons to the first one.

____________________________________________________________________________
Last Sunday, I had the chance to have one of my cherished Lilly store visits that occur once in a blue moon to return a dress that was too big on me. I wanted to exchange it for something new, but unfortunately, I left the store completely empty-handed. It was sad, and it made me think of everything I've written above.

All in all, Lilly needs a revamp, pronto. It needs to go back to its roots and consider its more traditional clientele. I do not mean that the younger, trendier clientele should be shunned, but they should not be the one and only focus. EVERYONE should be considered. So basically:

- Make better, more distinguishable, less busy prints.
- Bring more traditional styles back. Leave off the shoulder and tassels to tween mall favorites, and bring back those gin-belly hiding materials!
- Consider all seasons, not everyone lives in Florida or has the money to vacation there constantly (lol, if only!).
- Quality control. Like, right now. Also, tell your customer service peeps to be less rude. Getting hung up is SO not okay.

What do y'all think? Do you like this shift from traditional to trendy? How do you feel about Lilly Pulitzer? Let me know!
Love,

- Ane

Cyber Monday Turn Of Events & Reflecting On It

Kaixo everyone,

Remember that beautiful tote I was supposed to get... Well LOL. Lilly Pulitzer used clickbait yet again. I honestly do not know how I was that weak to fall for it. I was not particularly enchanted with anything (still not enchanted with any of the new stuff either), but seeing *FREE* in flashing lights and all the hype in different Lilly Facebook groups, I fell to it. And as many others, I did not receive the tote.

Now, the tote was a mystery gift offered at 12pm Eastern Time and was going on for an hour. I ordered it at 23:05 Central Time, yet I received a pair of earrings. They are definitely pretty, but neither what I wanted nor what I expected. I did have some exchanges with Customer Service (including one with a rather rude representative) on the topic, and well, since the package arrived two weeks late, the only thing I had to ask the representative was to avoid marking which present we would be getting and just referring to it as a mystery gift.

At first I was mad, but then I started to reflect on it and I felt really ungrateful and mean. Why would I be mad that a free present was not the one that I wanted? A family could've bought dinner with the money I spent. I could have donated that money to charity. I could have saved it up for a future project. I bought a phone case and got a free wine tote and free earrings. I didn't get a bag, but I have similar bags that I use and could use instead. Heck I have a ton of earrings!

There were many angry ladies on those Lilly Facebook pages, including myself. However, this incident will not change the course of my life, and it has given me some perspective. Objects are not everything, which is difficult to forget when you live in such a capitalistic society. A tote won't change my life or make it happier. Coffee with friends, a chat with the fam and other everyday moments 100% make up for it.

Plus I'm not that into flamingos anyway. ;)

Love,

- Ane

Cyber Monday Success!

Kaixo everyone,

I could elaborate a post about why I haven't posted since April, but I'd rather let y'all know how successful my Cyber Monday was this year! Last year, I got this beautiful Tory Burch wallet that I have been using non-stop since with an almost 30% discount from Bloomingdales:

Similar here

This year, I did not WANT to spend any money, as I had done some damage the week before in a day-trip to Chicago. However, the unthinkable happened. Two unthinkable things, actually:

1) Tory Burch 30% off: As per usual, the Tory Burch webpage sale was supposed to be applied to everything except for the coveted pieces that pretty much everyone has: The Miller sandals, the Minnie sandals, etc. are NEVER included. Like never ever.  During their Black Friday week deals, the lady at the Chicago store told me that the Light Oak Minnies were not included in the spend 250$, get 30% off sale.

However, this time it said "select colors not included." Also, this time it was 30% off no matter the price range, so I was going to get some earrings. Nevertheless, I was curious about those "select colors." I added the Minnie Light Oak flats to the shopping basket, added the code and... HOLY MOLLY! 70$ off! I have been coveting this particular shoe and color for quite some time, and suddenly, the doors opened. These shoes were not included in the birthday 50$ off deal, so I took a deep breath, and took the plunge. These babies are on my way! :D

Find them here

2) Lilly Pulitzer Cyber FunDay: I'm not gonna lie. Lilly Pulitzer has been letting me down for quite some time. I do not think it has to do with the prints, they are darling, but I think my style is evolving to something a little more demure and less wild. These shifts in style happen to everyone, and I am sure that this will change in a couple of months. Also, it is too damn cold for resort weather in Illinois. No 365 days of summer up here, ya feel? (I would like to take this opportunity to plead Lilly for actual winter clothes, thanks pink gods, xo)

Their Cyber Monday promotion in the last years has been a different gift with purchase every hour. I knew from checking in different Lilly Pulitzer Facebook groups that this year there would be 3 gifts during the day, but while studying at the library, I kept seeing that they were doing that promotion + extra hourly gifts. Nothing was particularly convincing, maybe an iPhone 6s case? Earrings? None of the gifts with purchase seemed to be worthy, though. UNTIL midnight EST. Mystery gift, and I'm here like huh? Luckily, the groups mentioned before were fast. I read "Gimme Some Leg," added the following phone case:

Buy it here
Got this wine tote and...

And finally looked at the mystery gift. What could it be? Gimme Some Leg, it must have been the new color way. So I copy-pasted the code of the mystery gift on Google and...

Y'ALL. THIS BAD B*TCH. FO FREE. No 68$, but 0 dollars. FO SHO I GOT IT. The time is unfortunately up for you to get it, but if you don't want to miss out, you can purchase it here.

I am really happy I was so successful this year, and I hope next year will top it off! As for my absence, I will fully explain it in a post (hopefully) soon. Many things (mostly good :D) have happened these months, and I cannot wait to let you all know.

All the best,

- Ane

OOTD: When You Go South, Wear Lilly

While Chicago was cold, my first trip to the South was nice and warm! It was also humid and we had downpours (hence the crazy hair and in some of the pics) but still nothing better than some nice sun and warmth for the soul with all the country music. Yes, I finally visited Nashville! And let me tell you, it was awesome! I loved the ambiance, the colors, the music, the food and the history! Since I was venturing below the Mason Dixon line, where Lilly abounds, I decided to rock my new Colie top in Multi Stems. I absolutely LOVE this top. It's a white v-neck (my go to), it has pink, the print is bold and fun and it's Lilly.

Cardigan: JC Penney (ancient, similar here) // Top: Lilly Pulitzer // Jeans: Uniqlo // Sneakers: Converse // Vest: GAP (similar here) // Sunglasses: BP. // Bag: Tory Burch (old style, similar here) // Bracelet: J. Crew (similar here) // Watch: Fossil (similar here)

It truly was the simplest outfit, but it felt so right. I felt bold as a flamingo yet composed and elegant, particularly with my other eBay find my Tory Burch Amanda logo bag, and with my new sunglasses I got in Nordstrom. When trying sunglasses on, I honestly asked my mom: "Which makes me look like a femme-fatale boss-ass bitch?" and then I bought them. I should have taken a resting bitch-face pic for you all to see but oh well, I was TOO HAPPY to be in Nashville with my loved ones! :)

So now tell me, what is your go to outfit for visiting the South? And if you are from there, how prevalent (or not) is Lilly? Let me know!
Love,

- Ane

Bargain Fashion Successes + Spring Break Travel Plans!

Kaixo everyone,

Long (very long) time no see! I would like to apologize for this hiatus without blogging, but school has been stressful and at night, the only free time I have for blogging, I only felt like watching some Netflix and sleeping.

This month was clearly eventful in the fashion area for me. I went back to participate with the UIUC chapter of the National Retail Federation, where I'm part of the engagement committee, but mostly, a whole new world of possibilities opened up to me via two platforms: eBay and Poshmark. I had bought things in eBay before, but I tried to steer away from bidding, as it's a binding contract, and you do not want to find yourself paying way too much for something because of the adrenaline rush to win the bid. As for Poshmark, I had heard of it before, but very vaguely. I honestly started looking once my officemate Megan told me she was actually selling some clothes, and considering the amount of clothes that I do not usually wear, I thought I may give it a try. So far I am very pleased!

eBay
My eBay bidding has been limited to a handful of things, but I usually dropped the race right when the prices started to be obnoxious. Speaking of obnoxious, for all of you Lilly fans, this Dark 'n' Stormy shift sold for almost 600$. Desperate, materialistic and unnecessary, in my opinion. It is definitely a beautiful print, but 600 dollars? Crazy.

This actually happened
Crazy. However, my success in eBay has been more economically fruitful, and waayyy cheaper! My first eBay win went as follows:

Some day in February:
- 17:00 (aprox): Oh damn that scarf... wait I posted it on my blog, it's this beauty I would wear to the library (as said here).

17:15: 25$ bid? I'm bidding. (Stays like this for two more days until the final day)

Two days later:

18:00ish: I'm grading exams, it's boring, let's see how the bidding goes. 27$? Um bid. 28$ yas.
18:50: Still same woohoo. Ends at 19:15 let's get ready.
19:05: 10 minutes, still hasn't changed.
19:10: Still same.
19:13: OMG.
19:14: 29$? OMG BACK OFF BIATCH 32$
19:15: Congratulations, you just won the Tory Burch scarf!

10 minutes and 4$ shipping later, it was coming MY WAY!!! YAYAYAYAYAYAYYYYYYY!! I fist bumped the air in the library while some people looked at me like wtf and loved my life. The times I've worn it, not only have I felt like a princess, I looked like it, and gosh it's so soft and cuddly!

Fast forward two weeks. I need a brown bag. Poshmark is offering some really nice Tory Burch bags (ugh obsessed with the brand), but they are either too expensive for a second hand bag or destroyed. eBay is offering one for bidding, pretty cheap. It was 50$ at first. And the bidding ended at 6:30am in three days.

Fast forward to 6:30am three days after, and it had come to 120, but I got it for 141$! Success!!!! I love it (it's in perfect condition), and I slept like a queen after winning that bid. While it is true that 141$ dollars for a handbag is rather pricey, the original price was 350$, and being Tory Burch, a highly coveted brand among American millennials, I believe that in the case that I would decide to sell it again, I could still get some revenue from it. It was a bargain for Tory Burch and an investment! :)

Poshmark
Poshmark has been a great discovery for me. As I mentioned before, I started selling my unused stuff when my friend Megan told me about it. While you really cannot make much profit (considering 20% of it goes to Poshmark and the shipping fees deter many customers), I have found it to be a very welcoming community. People share and like like crazy! While my intention was only to sell, I ended up shopping way more than I thought I would (oops). I got this NWT Lilly skort and Lululemon headband I had coveted when one of my students had it. Definitely great bargain fashion successes, considering I had not tried the skort on (perfect size, yay!) and the image for the headband was just okay.

Luckily, I have also been able to sell one thing! The Lilly for Hope bangle made for the American Cancer Society, which was my first Lilly buy ever. Unfortunately, it was too big for me, so I did not wear it much. Seeing my first Lilly piece go was somewhat sad, but I am happy to report that it ended in good hands, a recent cancer survivor! Serena, if you are reading this, you are gonna rock this bracelet! :)

MY FAMILY IS COMING TO VISIT!!!!!!!

Yes, that is right, for the first time since I moved here, my parents and my sister are coming to visit me and visit some awesome places like Chicago and Nashville!!! I could not be more excited!!! While I'm pretty familiarized with the Windy City, I have never been to Nashville, so any suggestions are welcome! :)

I will have the chance to see my loved ones, travel, and hopefully get some really nice pictures for the blog! How has your life been lately? Let me know! :)

My First Visit to a Lilly Pulitzer Store

Kaixo everyone,

I'm in a white state of mind with all this snow falling. Ugh. My hair almost froze today on my way back from doing groceries, my nose was as red as Rudolph's and I was dressed like an onion with all those layers. But let's be positive, winter in Illinois will be gone sometime... soon? EL OH EL I can win the Powerball from last week too following that logic... In any case, if you are positive about it will go soon. That has worked for me in the past. Something that will definitely help is some bright clothes and accessories that I bought the other day in my first time ever in a LILLY PULITZER STORE!!!!!!! I have bought many things over the internet but I had never been to a store.

After landing in O'Hare (like an hour after, customs and clearing took freaking 5ever), I took a cab to the Oakbrook Center, a mall in the Chicago suburbs that has a Lilly store, the only one in Illinois (at least a corporate location). Now it wasn't a regular situation. I had my 50lb suitcase with me, a 40l backpack and a tote, and I had till 5 when I had to take the bus to Champaign. I walked through Macy's pretending I had no suitcase (everyone was looking at it, it's bright green after all), made my way outside and made it to the Lilly store.

It was so pretty from the outside, and then I came in, and the ladies there were absolutely the best. Like, they offered to keep my suitcase and backpack behind the counter. UGH THANK DA LORD! Carrying all that wasn't only obnoxious, it was also super tiresome. My favorite part of the store were absolutely the fitting rooms. And I was placed in the coolest one, in my opinion, the Chicago one! It had exclusive Lilly paintings that evoked the city and everything about it, I absolutely LOVED IT.

Since it was the first time in a Lilly store, I tried a ton of things: Shirts, shorts, pants, etc.

Although all these were beautiful, they did not look that good on my skin (milky white girl probs), so I did not take them with me. However, I went with something that I had not thought of at all while looking at the web, but I decided to try it on because it was on sale and holy Jesus it looked beautiful!

I got my first Elsa! I was not planning to get one but I tried it on and it looked surprisingly pretty and put-together on me, and the colors were incredible. I don't know what my mom will say about ANOTHER pink and blue shirt (seriously, another), but it really, truly looks beautiful. I fell in love instantly. And believe me, pictures don't do it justice (I don't know how I do it to look like an awkward preggo lady every time I take a selfie SMH). Pictures don't do justice to the fitting rooms either.

I cannot wait to rock this piece soon. I'm particularly excited to take it to Nashville when my family comes visit in March, I believe people will be more appreciative of it over there lol. I did get some other accessories (a candle and two market bags) and I got the beautiful water bottle on promotion this weekend!

More additions to my ever-growing Wild Confetti collection

I wish I could've stayed at least 3 more hours in the store (and that I had a Black Amex too, a girl can dream) but I had to leave very soon. The adorable girl who helped me out even held the door open for me and my obnoxious entourage (yeah, my luggage) to leave the store. I wish the store had more things (like more shorts and dresses) but I loved shopping there and seeing everything first-hand.

So I went to take the bus, and was when I was at the pick up location (out in the cold in an Oakbrook Center parking lot), this lady who was waiting with her daughter to take the bus to Champaign as well told me to go in her car not to freeze to death, which was really sweet and moving. Overall, I was very happy! I got to Champaign, had a beer with my neighbors (I missed my babies so much!), unpacked and finally went to sleep after 24h awake. Now I'm back in Champaign and lesson-planning for the classes I'm teaching this semester.

I wish everyone had or has a great beginning of the spring semester, best of lucks!
Love,

- Ane
